Memphis filmmaker and Indie Memphis alum Craig Brewer is most famous for HUSTLE AND FLOW and BLACK SNAKE MOAN, movies about rap music and the Blues respectively. But his musical tastes span the gamut of musical genres, and his first film, THE POOR AND HUNGRY, centers on the career of a classical cellist.
Classical music played a critical role in Craig's artistic development. From an early age, his father introduced him to the great symphonic pillars of the classical repertoire. As a high school student, he started each day with Bernstein before heading off to sing in one of the competitive chamber choirs in his area.
At 8 pm on Saturday, October 3rd at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts, the Memphis Symphony will perform a concert of some of the works that inspired Craig and shaped his creative voice -- "Music as Muse: An Artist's Inspiration." During the course of the evening, he will lead the audience on a musical journey through some of the greatest works ever written for orchestra with personal stories and humorous anecdotes. The Memphis Symphony Chorus will join the Orchestra for an evening of grandeur, Hollywood style.
